About Mark and the Tiger
Mark and the Tiger is an indie rock band created and fronted by singer-songwriter Mark Haberland. Defined by story-driven lyrics and Haberland’s massive vocal range, Mark and the Tiger is a sonic tour de force : deeply queer, wildly expressive, and unapologetically itself.
Inspired by the soulful storytelling of Harry Nilsson fused with the bold irreverence of Harry Styles, all wrapped in the ethereal, witchy mystique of Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch. Yet, at its core, Mark and the Tiger is something wholly unique.
Mark and the Tiger embodies a life split between two worlds. Originally from Maine, Haberland met his Newcastle-born husband in Los Angeles in 2015, just as his music career was beginning. Since then, the two have spent their lives between the US and the UK, with Mark and the Tiger performing at iconic Los Angeles venues such as the legendary Whisky A Go Go and The Viper Room, as well as various stages across the UK. In 2024, a lifelong dream came true when Haberland had the chance to sing alongside prolific singer-songwriter and cult folk icon Dar Williams at an exclusive songwriting retreat in Connecticut.
Mark and the Tiger’s debut album, Little Adventures (2020), captured an artist in the process of discovery. More of a mixtape than a cohesive album, each song explores different facets of Haberland’s artistry. From the hypnotic snare-driven rhythm of Don’t Play Games, to the soul-drenched Hand to Hold, which places his powerhouse vocals front and center, the album is a testament to his eclectic influences.
By 2022, Haberland had found his voice, releasing the sophomore album, The Hero’s Journey, to critical acclaim. A concept piece inspired by Joseph Campbell’s legendary monomyth, the album takes listeners on an odyssey through the underworld and back. This project showcases Haberland’s desire to infuse his music with themes drawn from an unconventional life—including polyamory, plant medicine, and deep-rooted spirituality. Standout tracks include Muse, where harps from the Bwiti tradition of Gabon drive a hauntingly emotional chorus, and Meet Me, a jungle-inspired descent into the underworld, layered with recordings of real people experiencing live orgasms.
2025 marks the start of a new musical chapter for Mark and the Tiger. Adventure and self-discovery have always been at the heart of their sound, and this year’s upcoming music pushes that even further. Drawing inspiration from Bulgarian women’s choirs, Corsican polyphony, and traditional Chinese instruments, Mark and the Tiger’s new direction is a tidal wave of vocal melodies and driving percussion. The first single of this new era, River (Sarah and Nicole’s Song), was written for the wedding of Haberland’s best friend and her wife—a ceremony he also officiated. Set for release in June 2025, River is the first in a series of songs that aim to blend queer joy, authenticity, and irreverence with Haberland’s evolving perspectives on global responsibility and cultural edification.
